Mio Gelato
Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 11:26AM Everyone knows that Ice Cream is probably a food stylist's worst nightmare, especially if there is no budget for fake ice cream, and even worse if the ice cream in question is gelato. I'm not really a food stylist by profession but my work as a food photographer and prop stylist demands that I know enough about food styling to work on projects where a food stylist is off the budget.
When I worked with Mio Gelato, I was quite confident that I'd get the job right, having worked with Sebastian's ice cream before. But gelato was different, it was almost as soft and unstable as soft serve. And unlike soft serve, it doesn't come out of a machine, it's scooped up like ice cream. Thus I couldn't use my past technique of dipping the scooper in hot water before scooping, since the gelato would melt before it even lands on the bowl.
I ended up using water in room temperature, to prevent the gelato from sticking on the scooper while retaining it's perfectly round form. It worked, but not without a few failed attempts.

The other bowl you see at the back were mostly melted ice cream screaming imperfection, which was why I deliberately used it as a background instead of the actual "hero" among the two.
I do love my two ice cream bowls, they'd look perfect for mini parfaits or even on halo-halo. I just wished they came in other colors. My spoon was from IKEA, while the fabric was a Japanese patterned fabric from Saizen!
This shoot lasted for a record time of 15-20 minutes. I guess I was on a speeding rampage to keep the gelato from melting.

Yum!! You did a great job with such a delicate subject. :D I love the photo! From the ice cream to the fabric, haha.
Oh, something I've been dying to know:
Do you get to eat the food after you photograph it? ;;)
@Bea: thanks for the kind words bea! Most of the time we do get to eat the food, but there are times when the food is mixed with inedible substances during the styling process, when that happens we end up throwing them away. But I'm always for the less wasteful approach.:)
I think this scoop tasted like a fresh berry bursting in your mouth, amazing. beautiful texture and color.
